Flower & Perennial Crops
Seasonal position April - october
This is a unique role at the farm. While we are primarily a vegetable farm, we also grow and harvest nearly 100 species of non-traditional crops for floral and culinary uses. This year, we are joining the Missouri Flower Exchange and fellow Mid-Missouri flower farmers in launching a local wholesale floral market, and we are implementing two grants focused on native perennial plants and their use in specialty crop and diversified farm systems.
Pay: Starts at $15/hour (with paid breaks)
Days: Mondays or Tuesdays (preferably Tuesdays)
Hours: Generally 9 to 5 pm (varies with the weather and season)
Responsibilities: This position will include many typical farming tasks, such as flower seeding, weeding, planting, harvest and processing (cleaning, sanitizing, packaging, inventory), but may also involve data collection, documentation, and perennial crop installations and management (creating garden areas, planting, mulching, watering, etc.). This job does require occasional heavy lifting and physically strenuous tasks such as bending, kneeling, squatting, and the use of various hand tools.
Desired skills/knowledge:
Experience on a specialty crop farm (especially a cut flower farm)
Background in farming, gardening, horticulture, botany, floral design or related fields
Ability to work outdoors and tolerate weather, insects, sun, pollen, etc.
Attention to detail
Willingness to learn and follow instruction while also being capable of working independently w/o direct supervision
Understanding of botanical nomenclature, or excitement to learn it
